Wordpress Photo Gallery Plugins

3

There are some great Wordpress photo gallery plugins out there, and we just added a few here on WP Directory you should know about. Photo gallery plugins are great, because they allow you to go beyond the simple image upload functions available in Wordpress be default, and many allow you to connect to specific services via API. Today I’ll highlight 4 different photo gallery wordpress plugins that do 4 different things.

Flick Gallery Wordpress plugin: Flickr gallery does just what you would expect it to – it allows you to create a gallery of pictures stored in flickr (Yahoo!) accounts via API. You can get recent photos, photosets, a custom search, user tags, and do slideshow and gallery. You could even use this plugin if you didn’t have a flickr account using the custom search and maybe place related pics in flickr with certain blog posts. It even works with Wordpress MU, and has both pagination and lightbox features.

Shashin Picasa Wordpress Plugin: The Shashin Wordpress plugin gets pictures from your Picasa (google) account in the same way as the last plugin, but with Picasa you can store both photos and video, so of course with Shashin you can show and organize both photo and video galleries in your Wordpress blog. You can show any combination or groups of pictures and videos in galleries, thumbnail, or individual pics – you can even add links to google maps locations if you choose. It has widget support for the sidebar too! It has internationalization for translations, and you can customize the stylesheet to match your theme. You can schedule daily sychnonization as well.

PhotoSmash Galleries Wordpress Plugin: Have you ever wanted to give your readers the ability to upload their own pics and images? PhotoSmash fits the bill allowing users to do this, and creating galleries with them. It has Ajax photo uploads, control over who can upload, tag support, and support for the Role Manager plugin. Very configurable and customizable in every way. I wanted a plugin like this for ages – and there are so many uses it’s unbelievable. All family and friends to upload their pics to your blog after a birthday, holiday, or family reunion. Business events, concerts, or band blogs – all great candidates as well!

NextGen Gallery: NextGen gallery is the plugin you want if you are hosting pics on your blog (not elsewhere) and have hundreds to thousands+ images. It has sortable albums, allows uploading of individual pics or by zip file with thousands at once via FTP. You can use multiple stylesheets, and it supports lightbox, thickbox, and slideshows. It also has a slideshow widget for random pics and can be used in multiple languages. This is a heavy duty plugin for managing gobs of images, and probably the most popular wordpress photo gallery plugin out there with more than 700,000 downloads so far (and counting).
